Water Baptism
At Northcross, water baptism is a significant and joyful step in your faith journey. It’s a public declaration of your trust in Jesus Christ and your commitment to follow Him. While baptism is a deeply meaningful experience, it’s important to understand what it represents—and what it doesn’t.
Baptism is symbolic, not salvific
Water baptism does not save you. Salvation comes by grace through faith in Jesus Christ alone (Ephesians 2:8-9), so even a good act like water baptism does not save anyone. The act of baptism is a symbol—an outward expression of an inward transformation. It signifies the believer’s identification with the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus (Romans 6:3-4). Just as Christ was raised from the dead, so we too are raised to new life, leaving behind our old life of sin and embracing the new life we have in Him.
Baptism is a beautiful way to say to the church and to the world, “I belong to Jesus,” but it’s important to remember that it is the trust in Christ, not the act of baptism itself, that saves. There is no magical power in the water – it’s just tap water!
Baptism is an act of obedience, not an option
Jesus commanded His followers to be baptized (Matthew 28:19-20). It’s not a suggestion; it’s an act of obedience for those who have put their faith in Christ. As a follower of Jesus, baptism is a way to show your love for Him through obedience to His command (John 14:15).
While baptism doesn’t save, it is a crucial part of following Jesus. When we are baptized, we are aligning ourselves with Christ’s example and the early church’s practice. It’s a celebration of the new life He has given us and an important milestone in our walk with Him.
Ready to take the next step?
