Living a life of wisdom: be filled (2)

Sermon Sunday March 25

Being filled with the Spirit is essential for Christian growth, for progress toward Christ-likeness, for pleasing God and so much more.

This week we increase our understanding of what it means to be a Spirit filled Christian and the difference it will make in our walk with God.

As somebody commented after last weeks message – this is a truth you want all Christians to hear.

Ephesians 5:18-21

18 And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit, 19 addressing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with your heart, 20 giving thanks always and for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, 21 submitting to one another out of reverence for Christ. (ESV)

Acts 4:8-13

Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them, “Rulers of the people and elders, if we are being examined today concerning a good deed done to a crippled man, by what means this man has been healed, 10 let it be known to all of you and to all the people of Israel that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead—by him this man is standing before you well. 11 This Jesus is the stone that was rejected by you, the builders, which has become the cornerstone. 12 And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.”

13 Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were uneducated, common men, they were astonished. And they recognized that they had been with Jesus. (ESV)

Acts 5:1-11

5:1 But a man named Ananias, with his wife Sapphira, sold a piece of property, and with his wife's knowledge he kept back for himself some of the proceeds and brought only a part of it and laid it at the apostles' feet. But Peter said, “Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit and to keep back for yourself part of the proceeds of the land? While it remained unsold, did it not remain your own? And after it was sold, was it not at your disposal? Why is it that you have contrived this deed in your heart? You have not lied to men but to God.” When Ananias heard these words, he fell down and breathed his last. And great fear came upon all who heard of it. The young men rose and wrapped him up and carried him out and buried him.

After an interval of about three hours his wife came in, not knowing what had happened. And Peter said to her, “Tell me whether you sold the land for so much.” And she said, “Yes, for so much.” But Peter said to her, “How is it that you have agreed together to test the Spirit of the Lord? Behold, the feet of those who have buried your husband are at the door, and they will carry you out.” 10 Immediately she fell down at his feet and breathed her last. When the young men came in they found her dead, and they carried her out and buried her beside her husband. 11 And great fear came upon the whole church and upon all who heard of these things. (ESV)

Living a life of wisdom: Be Filled

Sermon Sunday March 18

As God’s people we are to be filled with God the Spirit not wine.

Being filled with the Spirit is both crucial and controversial. We know it is vital to obey this directive but Christians disagree about what it means.

How does filling with the Spirit differ from being indwelt by the Spirit, the baptism of the Spirit, and the sealing of the Spirit?

We will look at what the Bible teaches.

15 Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, 16 making the best use of the time, because the days are evil. 17 Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is. 18 And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit, (ESV)

Living a life of light: Shine

Sermon Sunday March 4

God insists that Christians live as children of light – but what does that look like, and how can we obey this instruction?

We are told to expose the fruitless deeds of darkness…but what are these deeds and how do we expose them?

You cannot change the world by blending in, can you?

Who is the text refering to when it says “Wake up, O sleeper, rise from the dead…”

We answer these and other important questions in this sermon

Ephesians 5:5-14

For you may be sure of this, that everyone who is sexually immoral or impure, or who is covetous (that is, an idolater), has no inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God. Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of these things the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience. Therefore do not become partners with them; for at one time you were darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light (for the fruit of light is found in all that is good and right and true), 10 and try to discern what is pleasing to the Lord. 11 Take no part in the unfruitful works of darkness, but instead expose them. 12 For it is shameful even to speak of the things that they do in secret. 13 But when anything is exposed by the light, it becomes visible, 14 for anything that becomes visible is light. Therefore it says,

“Awake, O sleeper,
and arise from the dead,
and Christ will shine on you.” (ESV)

Living a life of love: Not Lust

Sermon Sunday February 26

When we love God and people we won’t be consumed with self love. Led by the Spirit we avoid inappropriate ways of behaving (for example, sex outside marriage) and speaking (crude jokes).

If instead our lives are characterised by sinful, self centred behaviour there are serious consequences. Our actions contradict the claim that we are children of God. Because we aren’t genuine followers of Christ we are excluded from the kingdom of Christ and God.

How can a person ensure they are included in God’s kingdom? How can a Christian love like God instead of lust like the world?

Ephesians 5:3-6

But sexual immorality and all impurity or covetousness must not even be named among you, as is proper among saints. Let there be no filthiness nor foolish talk nor crude joking, which are out of place, but instead let there be thanksgiving. For you may be sure of this, that everyone who is sexually immoral or impure, or who is covetous (that is, an idolater), has no inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God.
